Men of the Great Assembly. This was an institution of one hundred twenty men who led the Jewish People at the beginning of the Second Temple era (ca 516 B.C.E.), for about three hundred years. They "restored the crown of the Torah" by composing many of the prayers, enacting ordinances to "protect" the observance of the Torah, and establishing certain holidays and fasts in the Hebrew Calendar.
