(m., pl. "chumashim"); the "Five Books of Moses;" These Books were "dictated," as it were, by HaShem, to Moshe, during the forty years that the Jewish People, the Children of Israel, were in the desert. The term is based on the Hebrew word for the number "5," "chamesh."
