Absolute (Car Engine)

Refers to a feedback device such as a resolver or an absolute encoder that provides unique position information for each discrete shaft location; unlike an incremental feedback device which requires a known reference point, an absolute feedback device retains position information when power to the system is momentarily lost.


Absolute (Carpet)

A chemical substance that is not mixed (i.e., pure). An example is absolute alcohol, with is ethyl alcohol, 99% pure, containing not more than one percent by weight of impurities.

Relating to file systems, the location of a directory or file that can be accessed regardless of the current working location of a user or program. For example, to access the Samba configuration file regardless of your current working directory, use the following absolute path: /etc/samba/smb.conf.
