Acrylic (Adhesives and Sealants)

A semi-rigid, two-component adhesive which bonds to a large variety of substrates. Acrylics are known for their environmental resistance, fast setting time and flame retardant properties.


Acrylic (Archival)

A plastic noted for transparency, light weight, weather resistance, color fastness and rigidity. In addition to these qualities, acrylics are important in preservation because of their stability, or resistance to chemical change over time, a characteristic not common to all plastics. Acrylics are available in sheets, films, and resin adhesives. Some common trade names for the sheet form are: Perspex®, Lucite® and PlexiGlas®.

Acrylic (Artist)

Paint made from pigments and a synthetic plastic binder, water-soluble when wet, insoluble when dry. Developed commercially in the 30s and 40s and perfected in the 50s through 70s, this popular alternative to oil paint can also duplicate many of watercolor's unique characteristics when used in a fluid manner. • Go to Acrylics section.

A plastic like material used in the manufacturing of paint to increase gloss and durability.


Acrylic (Beauty)

Acrylic is a material used for sculptured nails. The material is made up of a combination of a liquid and powder that is mixed to form the artificial nail. It has a moisture barrier that repels water (waterproof).

Acrylic (Body Jewelry)

Type of clear plastic derived from acrylic acid used in making jewelry among other things. Osiris Body uses Dental Acrylic, which is a much stronger type of acrylic, nearly indesructable.


Acrylic (Body Modification)

A type of plastic used in body jewelry. It is not appropriate for new piercings.


Acrylic (Body Piercing)

A clear plastic derived from acrylic acid.Commonly known by the name Perspex®.


Acrylic (Corrosion)

Resin polymerized from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, eaters of these acids, or acrylonitrile

Sculptured nail material. Combination of a liquid and powder that is mixed to form the artificial nail.


Acrylic (Costume Jewelry)

A glassy thermoplastic used in making costume jewelry that can be opaque or transparent, such as synthetic crystals, and characterized by a greater density and weight than plastic and with a smoother finish.


Acrylic (Dental)

A plastic used to false teeth, retainers, and other dental products. Dental acrylic has been tested and thought to be perfectly safe.

Acrylic (Health and Beauty)

A soft, hypo-allergenic synthetic fiber. Used in blankets; warm and less expensive than wool, but lacks breathability.

Acrylic (Plastics)

Material composed of various clear, thermoplastic resins obtained from acrylic acid and its derivatives, and from raw natural sources such as petroleum and natural gas. The effect is achieved by the polymerization of the esters of amides in acrylic acid or methacrylic acid.

A glassy thermoplastic vacuum-formed to cast and molded shapes to form the surface of fiberglass bathtubs, whirlpools, shower bases, and shower stalls. Do not confuse with gelcoat.
