Activated Sludge (Environment)

Product that results when primary effluent is mixed with bacteria-laden sludge and then agitated and aerated to promote biological treatment, speeding the breakdown of organic matter in raw sewage undergoing secondary waste treatment.


Activated Sludge (Sanitation)

Sludge withdrawn from a secondary clarifier following the activated sludge process; it consists mostly of biomass, with some inorganic settleable solids. Return activated sludge (RAS) is recycled to the head of the process; waste (excess) activated sludge (WAS) is removed for conditioning.
