Adapter (Computer Hardware)

The term used to describe expansion cards that are inserted into bus expansion slots.


Adapter (Fiber Optics)

A mechanical device designed to align fiber-optic connectors. It contains the split sleeve (interconnect sleeve) that holds the two ferrules together.


Adapter (Firefighting Equipment)

Plumbing accessories for connecting hoses and pipes of incompatible diameter, thread, or gender. See also reducer, increaser, double male, double female, water thief. May contain combinations, such as a double-female reducer. Adapters between multiple hoses are called wye, Siamese, or distributor, which see below.


Adapter (Home Audio)

A linking device which allows two dissimilar devices to connect physically, and/or communicate electronically. An interface between two sources.


Adapter (Import Cars)

1. Any of various pieces of hardware that permits non-matching parts to connect, mesh, or function together. 2. A device used to connect an engine and a transmission not originally designed to be used together. 3. Welds under a spring seat to increase mounting height of the fit seal to the axle.


Adapter (Microbiology)

A short chemically synthesized DNA double strand which can be used to link the ends of two DNA molecules.
