Adaptogen

For Adaptogen we have terms and definitions in 2 topics. The topics are Naturopathic and Nutrition.

Adaptogen (Naturopathic)

A recent (and to me, slightly flaky) term used to describe agents, often botanical, that stimulate non-specific resistance, and that seem to decrease hypothalamus and pituitary over-reactions to perceived...not real...stress.

Adaptogen (Nutrition)

A term used for a substance, usually an herb, that produces suitable adjustments in the body. Adaptogens tend to normalize body functions, and when the job is completed, they are eliminated or incorporated into the body without side effects. Some beneficial adaptogens include garlic, ginseng, echinacea, gingko, and goldenseal.
