Adsorption

For Adsorption we have terms and definitions in 11 topics. The topics are Car Care, Carpet, Corrosion, Environment, Import Cars, Insulation, Natural Gas, Pavement, Plumbing, Sanitation and Science.

Adsorption (Car Care)

Adhesion of the molecules of gases, liquids, or dissolved substances to a solid surface, resulting in relatively high concentration of the molecules at the place of contact; e.g. the plating out of an anti-wear additive on metal surfaces.

Adsorption (Carpet)

The attraction of gases, liquids, or solids to surface areas of textile fibers, yarns, fabrics, or any material (Also see absorption)

Adsorption (Corrosion)

The surface retention of solid, liquid, or gas molecules, atoms, or ions by a solid or liquid. Compare with absorption..

Adsorption (Environment)

Removal of a pollutant from air or water by collecting the pollutant on the surface of a solid material; e.g., an advanced method of treating waste in which activated carbon removes organic matter from waste-water.

Adsorption (Import Cars)

The attraction and/or retention of particles by molecular attraction or electrostatic forces present between the particles and a filter medium.

Adsorption (Insulation)

Refers to the surface retention or adhesion of a very thin layer of water molecules to the surfaces of a material (such as insulation fibers) with which they are in contact. Also see Sorption.

Adsorption (Natural Gas)

The extraction from a mixture of gases or liquids of one or more components, by surface adhesion to that material with which the gases or liquids come in contact. The adsorption or extraction process does not cause and is not accompanied by either a physical or chemical change in the sorbent material. Compare ABSORPTION.

Adsorption (Pavement)

Development at the surface of a solid of a higher concentration of a substance than exists in the bulk of the medium; especially in concrete and cement technology, formation of a layer of water at the surface of a solid, such as cement, or aggregate, or of air-entraining agents at the air-water boundaries; the process by which a substance is adsorbed.

Adsorption (Plumbing)

The process in which matter adheres to the surface of an adsorbent

See more Plumbing Terms ...

Adsorption (Sanitation)

(1) The adherence of a gas, liquid or dissolved material on the surface of a solid. (2) An increase in concentration of gas or solute at the interface of a two-phase system. Should not be confused with absorption.

Adsorption (Science)

Process by which one substance is attracted to and held on the surface of another substance.
