Aeration

For Aeration we have terms and definitions in 10 topics. The topics are Agriculture, Beer Brewing, Car Care, Corrosion, Environment, Fish, Gardening, Hunting, Plumbing and Sanitation.

Aeration (Agriculture)

To be exposed to air; to cause air to circulate through a medium.

Aeration (Beer Brewing)

The process of introducing (dissolving) air into wort or beer. Aeration of chilled wort at yeast pitching time is desirable, because yeast need oxygen to reproduce. Aeration of wort or beer at any other time in the brewing or fermenting process is generally considered to be bad, since it can cause oxidation, which leads to stale flavors.

Aeration (Car Care)

The state of air being suspended in a liquid such as a lubricant or hydraulic fluid.

Aeration (Corrosion)

(1) Exposing to the action of air. (2) Causing air to bubble through. (3) Introducing air into a solution by spraying, stirring, or a similar method. (4) Supplying or infusing with air, as in sand or soil

Aeration (Environment)

A process which promotes biological degradation of organic matter in water. The process may be passive (as when waste is exposed to air), or active (as when a mixing or bubbling device introduces the air).

Aeration (Fish)

Any active or passive process by which intimate contact between air and liquid is assured, generally by spraying liquid in the air, bubbling air through water, or mechanical agitation of the liquid to promote surface absorption of air.

Aeration (Gardening)

The loosening of soil by digging or other mechanical means to allow air to pass freely, usually done on lawns.

Aeration (Hunting)

The process of adding pure oxygen or air into water for the purpose of increasing the dissolved oxygen content.

See more Hunting Terms ...

Aeration (Plumbing)

The mixing or turbulent exposure of water to air and oxgen to dissipate volatile contaminants and other pollutants into the air

Aeration (Sanitation)

(1) The bringing about of intimate contact between air and a liquid by one or more of the following methods: (a) spraying the liquid in the air, (b) bubbling air or oxygen through the liquid, (c) agitating the liquid to promote surface absorption of air. (2) The supplying of air to confined spaces under nappes, downstream from gates in conduits, etc. to relieve low pressures and to replenish air entrained and removed from such confined spaces by flowing water. (3) Relief of the effects of cavitation by admitting air into the section affected.
