Afterload

Afterload (Cardiovascular) 
The amount of tension a muscle must build up before it can start to contract. For the heart, this is dependent on the aortic pressure. Before the ventricle can start to move blood through the aortic valve the pressure in the ventricle must equal that in the aorta.
