Alkali

For Alkali we have terms and definitions in 12 topics. The topics are Car Care, Car Wash, Carpet, Chemistry, Day Spa, Explosives, Glass, Import Cars, Nutrition, Paint, Plumbing and Sanitation.

Alkali (Car Care)

Any substance having basic (as opposed to acidic) properties. In a restricted sense it is applied to the hydroxides of ammonium, lithium, potassium and sodium. Alkaline materials in lubricating oils neutralize acids to prevent acidic and corrosive wear in internal combustion engines.

Alkali (Car Wash)

A chemical substance (such as hydroxide or carbonate of sodium or potassium) which reacts and neutralizes an acid.

Alkali (Carpet)

A term that should more properly be restricted to the hydroxides and carbonates of sodium and potassium. Phosphates such as trisodium and silicates such as metasilicate are also commonly considered as alkalis. Any soluble chemical substance that forms soluble soaps when mixed with fatty acids. Alkalis also are referred to as bases, and they may cause severe skin burns. Alkalis turn litmus paper blue and have pH values that are above seven (7).

Alkali (Chemistry)

Synonym for base.

Alkali (Day Spa)

A substance used to neutralize acids; capable of making soaps from fats.

Alkali (Explosives)

Alkali, Hydroxide of an Alkali Metal. Alkalies are soluble in water and form strongly basic solutions. They neutralize acids, forming salts and water. Strong alkalies (e.g., those of sodium or potassium) are called caustic alkalies. The term alkali is sometimes applied to sodium or potassium carbonate or to the hydroxide of an Alkaline-Earth Metal.

Alkali (Glass)

In glassmaking, a soluble salt consisting mainly of potassium carbonate or sodium carbonate. It is one of the essential ingredients of glass, generally accounting for about 15-20 percent of the batch. The alkali is a flux, which reduces the melting point of the major constituent of glass, silica.

Alkali (Import Cars)

A chemical "base" (the opposite of an acid) Certain types of alkalis (especialy potassium hydroxide) have been used as fuel cell electrolytes.

Alkali (Nutrition)

An acid-neutralizing substance (sodium bicarbonate is an alkali used for excess acidity in foods).

Alkali (Paint)

An alkaline, or "basic," chemical substance such as lime or lye. Generally present in fresh cement, concrete, or plaster.

Alkali (Plumbing)

Water-soluble mineral compound, usually a moderate strength base (as opposed to caustic hydroxide), such as a bicarbonate and carbonate compound when it is present in the water.

Alkali (Sanitation)

Generally, any substance which has highly basic properties. Particularly used with reference to the hydroxide salts of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium.
