Having a pH greater than 7.

Represents the amount of carbonates, bicarbonates, hydroxides and silicates or phosphates in the water and is reported as grains per gallon, or ppm as calcium carbonate.
See more Boiler Terms ...

A property of water soluble substances (or mixtures) causing the concentration of hydroxyl ions (OH-) in water solutions to be higher than the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+).
See more Car Wash Terms ...

The property of water soluble substances that cause the concentration of hydroxyl ions (OH-) in water based solutions to be higher than the concentration of hydrogen ions (h+). soap is mildly alkaline and detergents may be formulated with any desired degree of alkalinity. Denotes values above, but not including, seven (7) on the pH scale. See alkaline builders.

A pressure- and temperature-independent property of seawater that determines in part the carbon content of seawater. Carbonate alkalinity is the sum of the concen- tration of bicarbonate plus two times the concentration of the carbonate ions. Total alkalinity is the amount of acid required to bring seawater to a pH at which all dis- solved inorganic carbon becomes freely exchangeable. The alkalinity of the oceans is determined with potentiometric or normal titration techniques that detect and measure the presence of bicarbonate, carbonate, and borate ions.
See more Climate Terms ...

The capacity of bases to neutralize acids. An example is lime added to lakes to decrease acidity.
See more Environment Terms ...

Denotes the degree of alkali in a solution, measured in pH values. All values above pH 7 are alkaline.
See more Photography Terms ...

The measurement of constituents in a water supply which determine alkaline conditions. The alkalinity of water is a measure of its capacity to neutralize acids See pH.
See more Plumbing Terms ...

The capacity of water to neutralize acids, a property imparted by carbonates, bicarbonates, hydroxides and occasionally borates, silicates and phosphates. It is expressed in milligrams per liter of equivalent calcium carbonate.
See more Sanitation Terms ...

The capacity of water for neutralizing an acid solution.
