Alternating Current (AC)

For Alternating Current (AC) we have terms and definitions in 8 topics. The topics are Energy, Lighting, MRI, Solar Energy, Technology, Transistors, UPS and Uk Power.

Alternating Current (Ac) (Energy)

An electric current that reverses its direction at regularly recurring intervals.

Alternating Current (Ac) (Lighting)

Flow of electricity which cycles or alternates direction many times per second. The number of cycles is referred to as frequency. Most common frequency used in this country is 60 Hertz (cycles per second).

Alternating Current (Ac) (MRI)

A current that continuously changes in magnitude and direction. In the US the current changes at a frequency of 60 Hz.

Alternating Current (Ac) (Solar Energy)

A type of electrical current, the direction of which is reversed at regular intervals or cycles. In the United States, the standard is 120 reversals or 60 cycles per second. Electricity transmission networks use AC because voltage can be controlled with relative ease.

Alternating Current (Ac) (Technology)

This is a type of electrical current that reverses its direction at a regular interval, and can be represented by a sine wave. Alternating current is the type typically found in a wall outlet. You plug your TV, computer, refrigerator into alternating current. These devices then change the alternating current into direct current so that they can use the current properly.

Alternating Current (Ac) (Transistors)

A type of electrical current in which the direction of the flow of electrons switches back and forth. In the US, the current that comes from a wall outlet is alternating; it cycles back and forth sixty times each second. The current that flows in a flashlight, on the other hand, is direct current (DC), which does not alternate.

Alternating Current (Ac) (UPS)

Current which changes (or alternates) direction at regular intervals. Since the current flows in one direction for the same amount of time that it flows in the opposite direction, the average value of the current flow is zero.

Alternating Current (Ac) (Uk Power)

A periodic current, the average value of which over a period is zero. Typically refers to a current that reverses its direction at regularly recurring intervals of time and that has alternately positive and negative values. Almost all electricity utilities generate AC electricity because it can easily be transformed to higher or lower voltages
