An Animal Welfare Officer is required by the German Animal Protection Law for all institutions which conduct studies involving vertebrates. An Animal Welfare Officer must be a medical doctor, a veterinarian or a zoologist and have accumulated many years of experience in the field of animal welfare and with laboratory animals in a company which uses animal studies. The Animal Welfare Officer performs an internal supervisory role and implements the requirements of the Animal Welfare Law on site. At Bayer, the head of the Animal Welfare Office is also the companys Animal Welfare Officer.
