Anorexia Nervosa (Food and Health)

An eating disorder characterized by refusal to maintain a minimally normal weight for height and age. The condition includes weight loss leading to maintenance of body weight 15 percent below normal; an intense fear of weight gain or becoming fat, despite the individual's underweight status; a disturbance in the self-awareness of one's own body weight or shape; and in females, the absence of at least three consecutive menstrual cycles that would otherwise be expected to occur.


Anorexia Nervosa (Human Reproduction)

Marked reduction in the intake of food, caused by psychogenic factors and leading to malnutrition and amenorrhea.


Anorexia Nervosa (Medical)

Self-induced starvation with at least 15 percent of original body weight lost. May be accompanied by amenorrhea, fat phobia, and a severe distortion of body image.

Anorexia Nervosa (Mental Health)

An eating disorder characterized by refusal or inability to maintain minimum normal weight for age and height combined with intense fear of gaining weight, denial of the seriousness of current low weight, undue influence of body weight or shape on self-evaluation, and, in females, amenorrhea or failure to menstruate. Weight is typically 15% or more below normal, and it may decrease to life-threatening extremes. In the restricting subtype, the person does not engage regularly in binge eating. In the binge eating/purging, or bulimic, subtype, the person engages in recurrent episodes of binge eating or purging during the episode of anorexia nervosa. See also bulimia nervosa.
