Antioxidant (Anti-Aging)

a nutrient or chemical that reacts with and neutralizes free radicals or chemicals that release free radicals. Antioxidants are also called free radical scavengers. Vitamins A, C, E and some of the B vitamins, beta-carotene, selenium and some key enzymes in your body are all antioxidants. By intercepting the free radicals, antioxidants prevent them from damaging molecular structures such as your DNA (see free radicals).

Antioxidant (Atkins Diet)

An antioxidant is a chemical or other agent that inhibits or retards oxidation, whose by-products can cause premature aging, cancer, heart disease, arthritis and other diseases.

Antioxidant (Ayurvedic)

Absorbs or attaches to oxygen free radicals. Free radicals are highly receptive compounds that attack cell membranes, enzymes, etc. Ayurvedic herb examples: aamalaki, haritaki, triphala.

Antioxidant (Beauty)

Substance that helps to protect against the effects of environmental damage.

Antioxidant (Breast Cancer)

A substance that prevents oxidation or inhibits reactions promoted by oxygen.

Antioxidant (Calorie Restriction)

(1) A molecule capable of accepting an electron from an ROS, neutralizing it and halting the associated negative chain reaction. (2) A compound or agent capable of preventing or reversing the creation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROSs) or "free radicals". Examples are too numerous to list exhaustively, but include some vitamins such as vitamin E and C.

Antioxidant (Cancer)

A substance that prevents a chemical process called oxidation. This is when oxygen molecules join with another chemical. Oxidation damage to body cells can cause genetic mutations that can lead to cancer. So antioxidants may help to prevent cancer from developing.

Antioxidant (Carpet)

A substance to retard deterioration of fiber, fabrics, finishes, and other items resulting from reaction with oxygen.

Antioxidant (Clinical Trials)

A substance that prevents damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive chemicals that often contain oxygen. They are produced when molecules are split to give products that have unpaired electrons. This process is called oxidation.

Antioxidant (Day Spa)

Biochemicals that slow down free radicals by donating an electron.

Antioxidant (Enzymatic Therapy)

A substance that prevents the reaction of various food constituents with oxygen. Better known antioxidants include vitamins A, C, and E, and bioflavonoids.

Antioxidant (Food)

Tioxidants protect key cell components by neutralizing the damaging effects of "free radicals," natural byproducts of cell metabolism. ee radicals form when oxygen is metabolized, or burned by the body. ey travel through cells, disrupting the structure of other molecules, causing cellular damage. ch cell damage is believed to contribute to aging and various health problems.

Antioxidant (Food and Health)

Antioxidants protect key cell components by neutralizing the damaging effects of "free radicals," natural byproducts of cell metabolism. Free radicals form when oxygen is metabolized, or burned by the body. They travel through cells, disrupting the structure of other molecules, causing cellular damage. Such cell damage is believed to contribute to aging and various health problems.

Antioxidant (HIV and AIDs)

A substance that prevents or reverses OXIDATION. Antioxidants are produced by the body and can be added to the diet (e.g., VITAMINS A, C and E).

Antioxidant (Huntingtons Disease)

A molecule that is capable of reacting with free radicals and neutralizing them.

Antioxidant (Naturopathic)

A substance that prevents oxidation or slows a redox reaction. More generally, an agent that slows the formation of lipid peroxides and other free-radical oxygen forms, preventing the rancidity of oils or blocking damage from peroxides to the mitochondria of cells or cell membranes. Examples : Vitamin E, Larrea (Chaparral), Gum Benzoin.

Antioxidant (Nutrition)

A substance that blocks or inhibits destructive reactions in the body. Enzymes that protect your body by capturing the byproduct of your body's energy production - free radicals - and escorting them out of the body before they do any more damage. See article on: Free Radicals and Antioxidants

Antioxidant (Prostate Cancer)

A substance that inhibits oxidation or reactions promoted by oxygen or peroxides. Antioxidant nutrients protect human cells from damage caused by "free radicals" (highly reactive oxygen compounds).
