Arch Effect

Arch Effect (Ordination)

A distortion or artifact in an ordination diagram, in which the second axis is an arched function of the first axis. It is caused by the unimodal distribution of species along gradients. The arch appears in Correspondence Analysis and other ordination techniques. One of the main purposes of Detrended Correspondence Analysis is to remove the arch effect. Principal Components Analysis creates a more serious artifact called the horseshoe effect.
