Archival (Digital Photography)

The ability of a material, including some printing papers and compact discs, to last for many years.


Archival (Paper)

Acid free or neutral paper that includes a minimum of 2% calcium carbonate to increase the longevity of the paper.

Archival (Photography)

Method of processing designed to protect photographic materials from long-term deterioration. If processed correctly, silver-based materials are, by nature, archival. Color materials, due to deterioration of their organic dyes, are not archival. Also refers to any method of storage, analog as well as digital, that will not deteriorate over time.


Archival (Postcard)

Any museum quality material that will protect postcards for extended periods of time.

Archival (Scrapbooking)

Term used to describe a product or technique used in preserving artifacts, photographs, memorabilia and other items. Archival (or conservation) quality materials are stable or chemically balanced, suggesting durability and permanence (a high resistance to aging). Such materials are considered safe for preservation purposes


Archival (Sculptural)

Refers to materials that meet certain criteria for permanence such as lignin-free, pH neutral, alkaline-buffered, stable in light, etc.
