Arousal (Brain Injury)

Being awake. Primitive state of alertness managed by the reticular activating system (extending from medulla to the thalamus in the core of the brainstem) activating the cortex. Cognition is not possible without some degree of arousal.
ARTERIAL LINE - a very thin tube (catheter) inserted into an artery to allow direct measurement of the blood pressure, the oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations in arterial blood.
ARTICULATION - movement of the lips, tongue, teeth and palate into specific patterns for purposes of speech. Also, a movable joint.


Arousal (Physical Education)

A person's level of psychological and physiological activation, ranging from deep sleep to high excitement.
