Assessment (Accounting)

is a. proportionate share of a shared expense; orb. amount of tax or other levied special payment due to a governmental municipality or association.


Assessment (Addiction)

Interviewing a client to obtain the sociological background, psychological makeup, educational and work history, family and marriage difficulties and medical issues to better assess a client's need for treatment. Information is gathered and weighed carefully against specific criteria that determine the prevalence of a chemical dependency problem.


Assessment (Adolescent Mental Health)

A professional review of child and family needs that is done when services are first sought from a caregiver. The assessment of the child includes a review of physical and mental health, intelligence, school performance, family situation, and behavior in the community. The assessment identifies the strengths of the child and family. Together, the caregiver and family decide what kind of treatment and supports, if any, are needed.


Assessment (Biomediation)

An appraisal or evaluation (e.g., assessment of the degree of success of a remediation procedure at a contamination site).


Assessment (Brain Injury)

An evaluation of a patient based on the following information: 1. the subjective report of the symptoms by the patient. 2. the progress of the illness or condition. 3. the objective findings of the examiner based on tests, physical examination and medical history.
ATAXIA- a problem of muscle coordination not due to apraxia, weakness, rigidity, spasticity or sensory loss. Caused by lesion of the cerebellum or basal ganglia. Can interfere with a person's ability to walk, talk, eat and to perform other self care tasks.


Assessment (Commercial Real Estate)

The estimated value of property in order for a governmental fee to be imposed such as taxes or area improvements.


Assessment (Conservation)

The value placed on a piece of property by a taxing authority for the purpose of calculating the municipal property tax.


Assessment (Construction)

A tax levied on a property, or a value placed on the worth of a property.


Assessment (E-Learning)

The process used to systematically evaluate a learner's skill or knowledge level.


Assessment (Education, Gifted Education)

Assignment of value. Academically, this usually means grades. In psychology, it means comparing the tested measures of a subject’s mental characteristics (e.g., intelligence, personality, self-esteem) to a norm, or average. See grading, standardized test, authentic assessment, reliability, validity, and IQ.


Assessment (Educational)

An exercise, e.g., a written test, portfolio, performance, or experiment, that aims to measure a student's knowledge or skill in a given subject.


Assessment (Grantmaking)

Essentially a measurement process of the learning that has either taken place or can take place. Usually measured against stated learning outcomes:
* Predictive assessment attempts to measure what the learner might achieve given suitable training.<
* Attainment assessment attempts to measure what the learner knows or can do, and is usually related to the syllabus of a course the learner has followed.

Assessment (Medical Education)

A system of evaluation of professional accomplishments using defined criteria and usually including an attempt at measurement either by grading on a rough scale or by assigning numerical value. The purpose of assessment in an educational context is to make a judgment about the level of skills or knowledge, to measure improvement over time, to evaluate strengths and weaknesses, to rank students for selection or exclusion, or to motivate. Assessment should be as objective and reproducible as possible. A reliable test should produce the same or similar scores on two or more occasions or if given by two or more assessors. The validity of a test is determined by the extent to which it measures whatever it sets out to measure.


Assessment (Mental Health)

The valuation of property for the purpose of levying a tax, or the amount of the tax levied.


Assessment (Real Estate Appraisal)

(1) The valuation of real estate for purposes of taxes or special improvement charges. (2) The amount of taxes or special improvement charges. Special improvement charges are usually for the costs of streets, sidewalks, sewers, etc.


Assessment (Sanitation)

(1) The process of making the official valuation of property for purposes of taxation. (2) The valuation placed upon property as a result of this process.


Assessment (Shipping)

The imposition of antidumping duties on imported merchandise.
