For Asynchronous we have terms and definitions in 8 topics. The topics are ATM, Cellular Networking, DTV, Distance Learning, Import Cars, Microprocessor, Multimedia and Technology.

Not limited to sending data during a set time slot; having different rates

Data is transmitted only when needed. At least one bit is needed to indicate the start of transmission (known as a start bit). Compare with Synchronous

Lacking synchronization. In video, a signal is asynchronous when its timing differs from that of the system reference signal.

Asynchronous - what we're doing in this course. We're not meeting together at specific times. (The opposite term is "synchronous" and includes technologies like 2-way videoconferencing, face-to-face classes, chat rooms, etc.) One good source of information: JALN: Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks

[1] Not having a constant period or not synchronous. [2] A means of operating electronic circuits without a common timing signal to synchronize events; rather, the events occur at random times.

An event or operation not controlled by the master clock.
See more Microprocessor Terms ...

Refers to circuitry without a common clock or timing signal.

Refers to a non-timing dependent communications protocol where both sender and receiver don't have to be connected on-line for a message to be delivered. An example of this is e-mail where a user enters a message that's to be sent across a private or public network to a remote destination in a different time zone. Also used to describe a method of communication using a series of bits which carry their own timing information.
