Avoided Cost (Electric Power)

The minimum amount an electric utility is required to pay an independent power producer, under the PURPA regulations of 1978, equal to the costs the utility calculates it avoids in not having to produce that power (usually substantially less than the retail price charged by the utility for power it sells to customers).

Avoided Cost (Energy)

The cost the utility would incur but for the existence of an independent generator or other energy service option. Avoided cost rates have been used as the power purchase price utilities offer independent suppliers (see Qualifying Facilities).

Avoided Cost (Environment)

The cost a utility would incur to generate the next increment of electric capacity using its own resources; many landfill gas projects' buy back rates are based on avoided costs.

Avoided Cost (Natural Gas)

The incremental cost that a utility would incur to purchase or produce an amount of gas equivalent to that saved by a DSM measure. Components may include energy, capacity, storage, transmission and distribution. Avoided costs are generally used to represent the benefits of utility-sponsored DSM programs.

Avoided Cost (Uk Power)

The cost to produce or procure electric power that an electricity utility does not incur because it purchases this increment of power from a qualifying facility. It may include a capacity payment and/or an energy payment component
