Axis (Cad)

A principal direction along which the relative movements of a tool or
workpiece occur. Three linear axes, occuring at 90 degree angles from each other,
named X,Y and Z.

Axis (Chiropractic)

A large vertebra, or lower bone, in the upper cervical spine.

Axis (Construction)

Line around which something rotates or is symmetrically arranged.

Axis (Explosives)

A straight line about which a body rotates, or around which a plane figure may rotate to produce a solid; a line symmetry. One of a set of reference lines for certain systems of coordinates. (Plural: axes).

Axis (Eye Surgery)

In ophthalmology, a line that is the symmetrical center of a curved optical surface. Measure of astigmatism.

Axis (Fiber Optics)

The center of an optical fiber.

Axis (Golf)

Generally refers to a straight line (the spine) that the upper body rotates around in the course of the golf swing. (One reason for her consistent ballstriking is that her axis remains in a constant position throughout the swing).

Axis (Mathmatical Markup)

The axis is an imaginary alignment line upon which a fraction line is centered. Often, characters that can stretch such as parenthesis, brackets, braces, summation signs, etc., and operators are centered on the axis and are symmetric with respect to it.

Axis (Ordination)

I haven't the foggiest idea how to define this. Any suggestions? Axes are the basic structure of the Cartesian coordinate system, and are usually portrayed as being at right angles (i.e. orthogonal) to each other, though non-Euclidean coordinate systems also exist. With respect to the use of more exotic coordinate systems in ordination, see Camiz (1991)

Axis (Wind Energy)

The centerline of a rotating object's movement.
