Base (Anthropology)

A subunit of a nucleotide that makes up the DNA and RNA molecules; either a purine or a pyrimidine.

Base (Athletics)

Running that does not specifically train any system; however, it is aerobic running that provides the basic string to do specific running.

Base (Beauty)

A base is essentially a foundation, a skin-colored makeup used to smooth the surface of the skin and even its coloration. A base prepares the face for other makeup and comes in liquid, cream, powder, cake, and stick forms.

Base (Chemistry)

A compound that yields OH- ions in solution or a solution in which the concentration of OH- exceeds H+.

Base (Construction)

The finish or a room at the junction of the walls and floors.

Base (Corrosion)

A chemical substance that yields hydroxyl ions (OH ) when dissolved in water. Compare with acid

Base (Cosmetics)

Also known as foundation, a skin-colored makeup used to smooth the surface of the skin and even its coloration. Prepares the face for other makeup. Comes in liquid, cream, powder, cake, and stick forms.

Base (Dna)

See nitrogenous base.

Base (Drugs)

Cocaine; crack

Base (Evolution)

The DNA molecule is a chain of nucleotide units; each unit consists of a backbone made of a sugar and a phosphate group, with a nitrogenous base attached. The base in a unit is one of adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), or thymine (T). In RNA, uracil (U) is used instead of thymine. A and G belong to the chemical class called purines; C, T, and U are pyrimidines.

Base (Film)

Film has two basic elements: The base is the clear, perforated strip, and the emulsion is the thin, light-sensitive layer that is glued onto it.

Base (Finance)

A technical analysis tool. A chart pattern depicting the period when the supply and demand of a certain stock are in relative equilibrium, resulting in a narrow trading range. The merging of the support level and resistance level.

Base (Food Safety)

A substance with a pH above 7.0. Substances with a base pH include soap(pH 10.0) and ammonia (pH 11.2).

Base (Genetics and Genealogy)

A small chemical molecule which is the information portion of the nucleotides in DNA. The bases are: Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, and Guanine. These bases are represented by the letters A, T, C, and G, respectively. When these bases form the base pairs which are the rungs of the DNA ladder, Adenine always pairs with Thymine (AT or TA) and Guanine always pairs with Cytosine (GC or CG). See base pairs.

Base (Genome)

One of the molecules that form DNA and RNA molecules.
See also: nucleotide, base pair, base sequence

Base (Ham Radio)

A radio station located at a fixed location as opposed to a mobile. Used to identify the control location in a network of radio stations.

Base (Health)

Bottom portion of lower lobes of the lungs, located just above the diaphragm.

Base (Health Care)

A set dollar amount to cover the cost of health care per covered person excluding mental health/substance abuse services, pharmacy and administrative charges.

Base (Health and Beauty)

A base is essentially a foundation, a skin-colored makeup used to smooth the surface of the skin and even its coloration. A base prepares the face for other makeup and comes in liquid, cream, powder, cake, and stick forms.

Base (Heraldry)

The lower part of a shield. Specifically, the width of a bar parted off from the lower part of the shield by a line horizontally drawn. (Sometimes called basc-bar, baste and plain point.)
