A deterministic, stimulus-response theory of psychology which forms the basis for behavior modification and many common teaching methods. Behaviorism is concerned only with observable behavior, not with internal processes, meanings, emotions, attitudes, beliefs or values. Accounts of these things are treated as merely verbal behavior. In behaviorist teaching strategies, the teacher, not the student, establishes the goals, directs and controls the environment, and makes assessments. See educational philosophy.
