Benchmarking (Business Intelligence)

A point of reference for measurement.


Benchmarking (Business Process)

A method of measuring processes against those of recognized leaders to establish priorities and targets leading to process improvement. It is undertaken by identifying strategies, customers, processes and costs to benchmark and their key characteristics; determining who to benchmark; collecting and analyzing data from direct contact, survey, interviews, technical journals, and advertisements; determining the "best of class" from each benchmark item identified; and evaluating the process in terms of improvement goals.

Comparison of one organization's performance with a group of other organizations, on some particular group of measures. The best performing organization is considered to have best practice, and other organizations may adopt its methods.

Benchmarking (Sanitation)

The process of measuring performance against an established standard or criteria. In the wastewater industry this generally refers to comparing plant operations to plants of similar capacity or having similar processes.


Benchmarking (Supply Chain)

The process of comparing performance against the practices of other leading companies for the purpose of improving performance. Companies also benchmark internally by tracking and comparing current performance with past performance.
Benefit-Cost Ratio: An analytical tool used in public planning; a ratio of total measurable benefits divided by the initial capital cost.

Benchmarking (Technology)

This is the process of measuring the performance of hardware or software in a specifically defined and strictly controlled environment. The benchmarking result is usually represented by a time or a number rating that corresponds to how quickly certain tasks can be completed. The benchmark must be reproducible, of course, to have any meaning.
