Binary (Audio Technology)

The representation of number in powers of 2, this is the basis for most (but not all) digital systems, see also Ternary.

Binary (Computer)

A format or type of file, containing non-ASCII non-printable text. A word processing file, such as one written and saved in WordPerfect or MSWord, is a binary file and should be viewed from the word processing application. When transferring binary files with an application, such as FTP specify that the file should be transferred in binary.

Binary (Computer Hardware)

The base two numbering system, where the only digits are 0 and 1. It is used by all computers.

Binary (Computer Technology)

The binary number system only has two digits, or bits: 0 and 1. Binary files are non-text and are usually readable only by a program. These files are often compressed or coded in such a way as to be easy for a particular program to read. Any image can be described as binary.

Binary (DTV)

A numbering system using the digits "0" and "1" in the decimal system. All computer programs are executed in binary form.

Binary (Digital Imaging)

A numbering system based on 2s which use 0 and 1 when written. Binary files are about half the size of similar ASCII files.

Binary (Import Cars)

A system in which numbers are represented as sequences of zeros and ones, which is the basis of digital computing.

Binary (Internet)

Information consisting entirely of ones and zeros. Also, commonly used to refer to files that are not simply text files, e.g. images.

Binary (Linux, Red Hat)

A code system that uses 2 as its base and 0s and 1s for its notation. Binary code is used by computers as it functions well with digital electronics and Boolean algebra.

Binary (Scanner)

Base-two arithmetic, which uses only 1's and 0's to represent numbers. 0001 represents 1 decimal, 0010 represents 2 decimal and so forth. Binary numbers are used indirectly to refer to color depth, as in 24-bit or 8-bit color.

Binary (Technology)

Having two components, alternatives, or outcomes. The binary number system has 2 as its base, so values are expressed as combinations of two digits, 0 and 1. These two digits can represent the logical values true and false as well as numerals, and they can be represented in an electronic device by the two states on and off, recognized as two voltage levels. Therefore, the binary number system is at the heart of digital computing. Although ideal for computers, binary numbers are usually difficult for people to interpret because they are repetitive strings of 1s and 0s. To ease translation, programmers and others who habitually work with the computer's internal processing abilities use hexadecimal (base-16) or octal (base-8) numbers.
