The amount of oxygen needed by the organisms living in an aquatic environment. In cases of high biological oxygen demand (BOD), less oxygen is available for other organisms to be able to grow. Oxygen is needed by living organisms for cellular respiration. This is a process in cells that releases energy for cell reactions.

An indirect measure of the concentration of biologically degradable material present in organic wastes. It usually reflects the amount of oxygen consumed in five days by biological processes breaking down organic waste.
