Blind (Book Collecting)

or "blind stamped" or "stamped in the blind" This refers to stamping or impressions on the cover of a book that have not been filled in with color or gilt.
Use the word "embossed" if you are talking to someone who is secure in their ignorance.
Book clubs have often used a small blind stamp in the form of a circle, square, small leaf on the bottom right corner of the back cover of a book to distinguish their issue from that of the regular publishers edition.

Blind (Bowling)

Score allowed for an absent member, usually the average minus ten or a set score (for example, 140 for men and 120 for women); considered a penalty. Many league rules define "Blind" and "Absentee" with different qualifications. (dummy)

Blind (Clinical Trials)

A randomized trial is "Blind" if the participant is not told which arm of the trial he is on. A clinical trial is "Blind" if participants are unaware on whether they are in the experimental or control arm of the study; also called masked. (See Single Blind Study and Double Blind Study).


Blind (Dream)

To dream of being blind, denotes a sudden change from affluence to almost abject poverty.
To see others blind, denotes that some worthy person will call on you for aid.

A term used of pastry which is baked in advance prior to being filled with a sweet or savory mixture.

Blind (Gardening)

The loss of the growing point, resulting in stoppage of growth. Also, failure to produce flowers or fruit.


Blind (Interior Design)

Slatted or pleated window covering, typically inside mount SEE SHADE


Blind (Paranormal)

An experimental control in which subjects are not informed of certain key features of the experiment. Also used to refer to a procedure where a judge is asked to compare targets and responses without knowing which responses were made to which targets. See also double blind.
