Block (Backgammon)

A point (1) occupied by two or more checkers held for the purpose of hindering the opponent's progress.


Block (Badminton)

A shot, usually from near the net, on which the racket is not swung, but simply used as a "backboard" to return the shuttlecock.


Block (Boating)

A wood, metal, or synthetic casing containing one or more pulleys or sheaves.

A piece of wood at the start line on which the brakeman places his feet in order to get a better start.

Block (Computer Hardware)

An amount of data moved or addressed as a single unit; the smallest amount of data that can be read or written at a time. Blocks are separated by physical gaps, or identified by their track/sector addresses or logical addresses.


Block (Computing and Social Science)

On magnetic tape, a physical chunk of information separated from other blocks by an interblock gap of blank space. The computer reads and processes the information from a tape in blocks. The size of a block is typically a multiple of the size of a physical record .


Block (Cycling)

To disrupt a chase by slowing down the pace line. It can be the action of one or more riders. Blocking is often done to protect a teammate who's in the lead.

In video encoding, an 8x8 matrix of pixels or DCT values representing a small chunk of luma or chroma. In DVD MPEG-2 video, a macroblock is made up of 6 blocks: 4 luma and 2 chroma.

Block (Glass)

A block of wood hollowed out to form a hemispherical recess. After it has been dipped in water to reduce charring and to create a "cushion" of steam, the block is used to form the gather into a sphere, prior to inflation.

A swing in which the rotation of the forearms is delayed or prevented throughout the hitting area, generally producing a shot that flies to the right of the target. (With a pond guarding the left side of the green. Ernie Els blocked his approach shot to the right of the flag).

Block (Hard Drive Recovery)

A group of bytes handled, stored, and accessed as a logical data unit, such as an individual file record. A block in UNIX workstation environments is the smallest contiguous area that can be allocated for the storage of data. (Note: A different definition of the term is used when referring to the physical configuration of a hard drive.)

A wooden form used as a mould to shape, by hand a brim or crown.

Block (Magnetic Tapes)

Block (Nautical)

One or more pulleys designed to carry a line and change the direction of its travel. A housing around the pulley allows the block to be connected to a spar or to another line. Lines used with a block are known as tackle.

Block (Technology)

A collection of consecutive bytes of data that are read from or written to a device (such as a disk) as a group. 6. A rectangular grid of pixels that are handled as a unit. 7. A segment of text that can be selected and acted upon as a whole in an application.1. To distribute a file over fixed-size blocks in storage. 2. To prevent a signal from being transmitted. 3. To select a segment of text, by using a mouse, menu selection, or cursor key, to be acted upon in some way, such as to format or to delete the segment.
