Board Foot (Boating)

A lumber measurement. One board foot = 1" X 12" X 12". A piece of lumber 2" X 12" X 12" = 2 board feet. When width and thickness are specified, lumber may be called out as linear feet, i.e., 1" X 6" X 24 linear feet. Linear feet is used when the the lumber will be cut into various lengths, as opposed to a piece 1" X 6" x 24' which would be a single piece of wood.

Board Foot (Construction)

A unit of measure for lumber equal to 1 inch thick by 12 inches wide by 12 inches long. Examples: 1" x 12" x 16' = 16 board feet, 2" x 12" x 16' = 32 board feet

Board Foot (Forestry)

A unit of wood measuring 144 cubic inches. A 1-inch by 12-inch shelving board that is 1 foot long is equal to 1 board foot. Board foot volume is determined by:
length (feet) x width (inches) x thickness (inches)/divided by 12

Board Foot (Hunting)

A measurement term for lumber or timber. It is the amount of wood contained in an unfinished board 1 inch thick, 12 inches long, and 12 inches wide.

Board Foot (Roofing)

In carpentry, the equivalent of a board 1 foot square and 1 inch thick.

Board Foot (Wood)

A volume of lumber that measures 1" x 12" x 12". The number of board feet in a log is estimated using one of three log scales: Scribner, Doyle, or International Rule. The standard used in Massachusetts is the International Rule. The actual yield of a log after sawn into lumber is often greater than the estimated yield. Both logs and lumber are sold by the thousand board feet or MBF.
