Operation to remove breast cancer but not the breast. Types of breast-sparing surgery include lumpectomy, which involves the removal of only the breast lump and some normal tissue around it, and partial (or segmental) mastectomy, which involves removing more of the breast tissue than in a lumpectomy. Breast-sparing surgery is also called breast-conserving surgery.
