Bridge (Billiards)

(General) The hand configuration that holds and guides the shaft-end of the cue during play. (See mechanical bridge)


Bridge (Boating)

The location from which a vessel is steered and its speed controlled. "Control Station" is really a more appropriate term for small craft.

Bridge (Body Jewelry)

Horizontal piercing through the upper part of the nose between the eyes.


Bridge (Body Modification)

Also called an 'earl'. This is a piercing at the top of the nose, through the fleshy part between the eyes, not the cartilage.


Bridge (Body Piercing)

Horizontal piercing through the bridge of the nose, sometimes also called an “earl.”


Bridge (Bowling)

Distance separating finger holes (as opposed to span, the distance between the thumb hole and middle finger hole).

Bridge (Car Design)

An upside-down-U-shaped device that rides on side rails over a clay model. It’s used to take reference points and make accurate measurements of the model.


Bridge (Clocks)

In watches, the upper plate which contains either bushings, or, jewels upon which the arbor pivot rotates. In most watches, and some clocks that employ a platform escapement a separate bridge is used to support the escapement components. Watches may have up to five or six bridges. Each bridge adds to the expense of the watch, however, expedites repairs as a complete disassembly may not become necessary.

Bridge (Computer Hardware)

A term used to identify a motherboard component that ties one bus to another. A PCI-to-PCI bridge will tie two PCI busses together. A PCI-to-CardBus bridge will tie PCI and CardBus together.


Bridge (Conference Calling)

A piece of equipment used to connect a conference call with three of more telephone lines, so all participants can access the same call.

Where the steering and navigation equipment are located


Bridge (Cruises)

A crosswise platform or enclosed area above the main deck of a ship from which the ship is controlled. The navigation and command centre of the vessel. If your cruise offers a tour of the bridge, take it!

Bridge (Dream)

Bridge (E-Learning)

A device linking two or more sections of a network.


Bridge (Herpetology)

The part of the shell between the front and hind legs connecting the upper and lower halves of the shell.


Bridge (Industrial Products)

That part of an overhead crane, consisting of one girder, trucks and, if applicable, drive mechanism, which carries the trolley or trolleys.


Bridge (Luge)

A section of the sled that connects the kufens and carries the pod. Each sled has a front bridge and a rear bridge.

Bridge (Nautical)

The platform above the main deck from which the vessel is piloted. BULKHEADS: The vertical surfaces or walls within a vessel for structural as well as space planning purposes.

Bridge (Networking)

This is a networking device that forwards packets from one LAN to another. It uses the MAC address of an incoming packet to determine whether to drop or forward it. It allows the LANs to see each other’s devices, thus it is not as private or secure as a router.


Bridge (Sensors)

An electronic network that effectively provides zero offsetting.

Bridge (Tap Dance)

Normally, the third eight measures of a thirty - two measure chorus. Some choruses have no bridge.


Bridge (Technology)

Bridges link two or more network segments that use the same network technology. The network topologies do not have to be the same, i.e. you can bridge Ethernet and Token Ring. If the protocols are not the same on segments, then you've got a router. Bridges are used to reduce network traffic, increase cable distance (by acting as a repeater), and also to link dissimilar network topologies that run the same network protocol.


Bridge (Watches)

Complementary part fixed to the main plate to form the frame of a watch movement. The other parts are mounted inside the frame.

An arched position adopted by a wrestler, with his back above the mat, usually to avoid being pinned but sometimes as an offensive move.
