Camshaft

Camshaft (Automotive)

A machined shaft with lobes that open and close engine-cylinder intake and exhaust valves. As the shaft rotates, the lobes push against valve springs to open the valves and rotate away to close them. Driven by the crankshaft.


Camshaft (Import Cars)

A shaft having lobes driven by the crankshaft via gears, chains, or belts that, in turn, opens and closes the intake and exhaust valves at proper intervals.


Camshaft (Indycar Racing)

A rotating shaft in the engine that opens and closes the engine's intake and exhaust valves.


Camshaft (Motorcycles)

A shaft with two or more cams used in the four stroke engine to operate inlet and/or exhaust valves.
