Canvas (Art History)

A gallery for singers or musicians, usually in a church. Two outstanding examples are those by the sculptors Andrea della Robbia and Donatello in Florence cathedral, both of which have richly carved marble panels.


Canvas (Boating)

Sails. Cruising canvas consists of relatively small sails generally used when cruising. Racing canvas consists of a boat's racing sails, which are larger than cruising sails.

The window in which hosts and other drawing objects, which represent a network scheme, are placed.


Canvas (Digital Imaging)

The entire image displayed on the monitor, but not necessarily at full resolution.


Canvas (Interior Design)

Closely-woven cotton, linen or hemp woven fabric


Canvas (Nautical)

Tightly woven cloth used for sails, covers and biminis. Typically made from cotton, hemp or linen. Modern sails are made out of synthetic materials generally known as sailcloth.

Canvas (Rowing)

The tapered section of a boat between the bowman and the bow of the boat or between the coxswain and the stern. So called because it used to be covered with canvas.

A plain weave usually made from cotton or linen.
