Capacity Factor (Electric Power)

The amount of energy that the system produces at a particular site as a percentage of the total amount that it would produce if it operated at rated capacity during the entire year. For example, the capacity factor for a wind farm ranges from 20% to 35%. Thirty-five percent is close to the technology potential.


Capacity Factor (Energy)

A percentage that tells how much of a power plant's capacity is used over time. For example, typical plant capacity factors range as high as 80 percent for geothermal and 70 percent for cogeneration.

The ratio of the actual sales during any specified period to the maximum amount of sales the system is capable of delivering during that time.
