Carbon monoxide

For Carbon monoxide we have terms and definitions in 9 topics. The topics are Atmospheric Chemistry, Ethanol, Explosives, Import Cars, Natural Gas, Oil, Physical Geography, Quitting Smoking and Science.

Carbon Monoxide (Atmospheric Chemistry)

CO, a toxic, odorless, colorless gas produced during fossil fuel or biomass burning. Compound consisting of one carbon and one oxygen. Except for carbon dioxide, it is one of the longest lived naturally occurring atmospheric carbon compounds (this wording is meant to exclude chlorofluorocarbons). The recent change in tropospheric CO content may portend a change in the balance between oxidants and reductants in the atmosphere. [Journal of Geophysical Research;v95; 16443-16450;1990] [Scientific American;v261; 82-88;1989]

Carbon Monoxide (Ethanol)

A deadly gas produced from the tailpipe when cars burn gasoline. Ethanol in unleaded gasoline helps reduce carbon monoxide emissions by as much as 30 percent.

Carbon Monoxide (Explosives)

Carbon monoxide, chemical compound (CO), colorless, odorless, tasteless, extremely poisonous gas that is less dense than air under ordinary conditions. It burns in air with a characteristic blue flame, producing carbon dioxide. It is a component of the artificial fuels producer gas and water gas. As a reducing agent, it removes oxygen from many compounds and is used in the reduction of metals from ores. When air containing as little as 0.1% carbon monoxide by volume is inhaled, the oxygen of hemoglobin is replaced by the carbon monoxide, resulting in fatal oxygen starvation throughout the body.

Carbon Monoxide (Import Cars)

(CO) A harmful pollutants composed of one atom of oxygen and one atom of carbon. A product of incomplete combustion.

Carbon Monoxide (Natural Gas)

Colorless, odorless, poisonous gas produced by incomplete combustion of fossil fuels.

Carbon Monoxide (Oil)

Colorless, odorless, poisonous gas produced by incomplete combustion of fossil fuels.

Carbon Monoxide (Physical Geography)

A colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is produced by the incomplete burning of fossil fuels. The chemical formula for carbon dioxide is CO.

Carbon Monoxide (Quitting Smoking)

A colorless, odorless, highly poisonous gas, CO, found in tobacco smoke.

Carbon Monoxide (Science)

A by-product of tobacco smoke and other types of combustion. Carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells, thus blocking the site where oxygen molecules would normally be carried in the red blood cells and depriving the user of oxygen.
