Casting (Adhesives and Sealants)

The finished product of a casting operation. Should not be used as a synonym for molding.


Casting (Automotive)

a process technology that delivers a liquid molten metal into a purpose-built mould. After cooling, the solid metal surface has the shape of the mould cavity.


Casting (Costume Jewelry)

Metal designs that are formed with a mold, generally using the lost wax method. Castings are used extensively in costume jewelry because they can be mass produced much cheaper than stampings.


Casting (Entertainment)

The process of hiring actors to play the characters in a script. The lead roles are typically cast by the director or a producer, minor roles and bit parts by a casting director.


Casting (Entertainment Industry)

When a casting director puts out the news that he needs to fill a certain role that requires an approximate age range and appearance such as a certain ethnicity, height, build or look.


Casting (Film)

Responsible for bringing actors/actresses under contract to appear in the piece. Talent is cast to appear as they do in the story (short, skinny, large, Latino, Caucasian, African-American, etc.).

Process of sculpture in which a molten metal or substance is poured into a mold and allowed to harden.

Ladling hot glass into a mould (often created by the Cire perdu process) and allowing to solidify before annealing

An uncocking of the wrists prematurely on the downswing, resulting in a loss of power and control. Also known as "hitting from the top." (Smith had a tendency to swing at and not through the ball, which caused him to cast the club from the top of the swing).

Casting (Import Cars)

A metal object formed to the required shape by pouring or injecting liquid metal into a mold.


Casting (Insulators)

Seldom-used form of making wet process porcelain insulators where a difficult shape is desired. Thick clay slip is poured into a plaster mold. The plaster mold absorbs the excess water leaving a semi-dry clay body.


Casting (Java)

Explicit conversion from one data type to another.
