Cell (Anthromorphemics)

The smallest unit that is considered to be alive. All living organisms either are one cell or are composed of several cells.

Cell (Anthropology)

The smallest unit that is considered to be alive. All living organisms either are one cell or are composed of several cells.

Cell (Automotive)

An electrical energy storage device, consisting of negative and positive plates immersed in a conductive fluid (electrolyte).

Cell (Batteries)

The basic electrochemical unit used to generate or store electrical energy.

Cell (Bioinformatics)

The basic unit of any living organism.

Cell (Biotechnology)

The fundamental level of structural organization in complex organisms. Cells contain a nucleus (with chromosomes) and cytoplasm with the protein-synthesis machinery, bounded by a membrane.

Cell (Bodybuilding)

The smallest structural unit of living material.

Cell (Breast Cancer)

A mass of protoplasm containing a nucleus or nuclear material. A cell is the unit of structure of all animals and plants. Cells and cell products make up all the tissues of the body. All functional activities of the body are performed by cells; and their form and structure are closely tied to their functions. Cells originate only from pre-existing cells, meaning new cells arise by cell division. The growth and development of cells result from the increase in numbers of cells into different types of tissues.

Cell (Business Intelligence)

In a cube, the set of properties, including a value, specified by the intersection when one member is selected from each dimension. Most cells in a multidimensional structure are empty, leading to 'sparse' storage.

Cell (Cancer)

The individual unit that makes up all of the tissues of the body. All living things are made up of one or more cells.

Cell (Cell Phone)

A cell is the basic geographic unit of a cellular system and the basis for the generic industry term "cellular.” A city or county is divided into small "cells," each of which is equipped with a low-powered radio transmitter/receiver. By controlling the transmission power and the radio frequencies assigned from one cell to another, a computer at the Mobile Telephone Switching Office (MTSO) monitors the movement and transfers the phone call to another cell and another radio frequency as needed.

Cell (Cellular)

The area surrounding a cell site. The area in which calls are handled by a particular cell site.

See more Cellular Terms ...

Cell (Cellular Networking)

The coverage area of a single radio cellsite or sector in a cellular or PCS system

Cell (Corrosion)

Electrochemical system consisting of an anode and a cathode immersed in an electrolyte. The anode and cathode may be separate metals or dissimilar areas on the same metal. The cell includes the external circuit, which permits the flow of electrons from the anode toward the cathode. See also electrochemical cell.

Cell (DVD)

In DVD-Video, a unit of video anywhere from a fraction of a second to hours long. Cells allow the video to be grouped for sharing content among titles, interleaving for multiple angles, and so on.

Cell (DVD Authoring)

The DVD Video data element within a program that is the smallest general navigation unit for defining jump points in the video and audio content.

Cell (DVD and CD)

In DVD-Video, a unit of video anywhere from a fraction of a second to hours long. Cells allow the video to be grouped for sharing content among titles, interleaving for multiple angles, and so on.

Cell (Dairy Production)

The smallest structural unit of an organism that is capable of independent function, usually consisting of one nucleus, cytoplasm, and organelles all surrounded by a plasma membrane. Cells are usually organized in tissues.

Cell (Diabetes)

Unit of body structure.

See more Diabetes Terms ...

Cell (Ecology)

The building blocks of life. All living things (organisms) are made of cells.

See more Ecology Terms ...

Cell (Electric Power)

The basic unit of a photovoltaic system.

Cell (Evolution)

The basic structural and functional unit of most living organisms. Cell size varies, but most cells are microscopic. Cells may exist as independent units of life, as in bacteria and protozoans, or they may form colonies or tissues, as in all plants and animals. Each cell consists of a mass of protein material that is differentiated into cytoplasm and nucleoplasm, which contains DNA. The cell is enclosed by a cell membrane, which in the cells of plants, fungi, algae, and bacteria is surrounded by a cell wall. There are two main types of cell, prokaryotic and eukaryotic.

Cell (Genome)

The basic unit of any living organism that carries on the biochemical processes of life.
See also: genome, nucleus

See more Genome Terms ...

Cell (Huntingtons Disease)

The smallest structural unit of an organism that is capable of independent functioning, consisting of one or more nuclei, cytoplasm and various organelles, all surrounded by a membrane.

Cell (Insect)

An area of the wing bounded by a number of veins. A cell is closed if it is completely surrounded by veins and open if it is bounded partly by the wing margin.

See more Insect Terms ...

Cell (Legal, Mesothelioma)

He basic unit of which all living things are made. Cells replace themselves by splitting and forming new cells (mitosis). The processes that control the formation of new cells and the death of old cells are disrupted in cancer.

Cell (Medical)

The tiny structures that make up all the tissues of the body and carry out all of its functions

See more Medical Terms ...

Cell (Microbiology)

The fundamental unit of living matter.

Cell (Networking)

This is the data packet unit that ATM transmits. One cell consists of 53 bytes.

Cell (Nutrition)

A very small but complex organic unit consisting of a nucleus, cytoplasm, and a cell membrane. All living tissues are composed of cells

Cell (Oceanography)

The smallest unit of all living things. All organisms are made up of cells.

Cell (Physical Geography)

A cell is the smallest self-functioning unit found in living organisms. Each cell is enclosed by an outer membrane or wall and contains genetic material (DNA) and other parts to carry out its life functions. Some organisms such as bacteria consist of only one cell, but most of the organisms found on the Earth are made up of many cells.

Cell (Pituitary)

The basic living unit of body tissue. It contains a nucleus surrounded by cytoplasm and is enclosed by a membrane.

Cell (Science)

Structural unit of an organism, in most cases visible only with a microscope

See more Science Terms ...

Cell (Solar Energy)

The basic unit of a photovoltaic panel or battery.

Cell (Supply Chain)

A manufacturing or service unit consisting of a number of workstations, and the materials transport mechanisms and storage buffers that interconnect them.

Cell (Technology)

1. The intersection of a row and a column in a spreadsheet. Each row and column in a spreadsheet is unique, so each cell can be uniquely identified--for example, cell B17, at the intersection of column B and row 17. Each cell is displayed as a rectangular space that can hold text, a value, or a formula. 2. An addressable (named or numbered) storage unit for information. A binary cell, for example, is a storage unit that can hold 1 bit of information--that is, it can be either on or off.

Cell (Telecommunications)

The receiver/transmitter a GSM phone connects to; the equivalent of the base station of a cordless phone. A cell can support a number of simultaneous calls.

Cell (Weather)

Convection in the form of a single updraft, downdraft, or updraft/downdraft couplet, typically seen as a vertical dome or tower as in a cumulus or towering cumulus cloud. A typical thunderstorm consists of several cells (see multi-cellular thunderstorm).
The term "cell" also is used to describe the radar echo returned by an individual shower or thunderstorm. Such usage, although common, is technically incorrect.

Cell (Woodworking)

The smallest, microscopic, structure in wood.
