By treaty, other European countries may not use the name "Champagne" for their sparkling wines (similar to the situation with "Chablis"). However, in the United States, the name is not proscribed and some producers still use it. The practice is changing, especially among American producers of higher priced sparkling wines and, today, most are simply called "sparkling wine."
