Clear (Auto Body)

A finishing coat, such as a coat of paint without pigment (hence "clear") which protects or covers a color coat and acts as a lens that enhances color and depth.


Clear (Badminton)

A shot, similar to the lob in tennis, that is hit over the opponent's head, usually to a point near the back boundary line. The attacking clear is an attempt to score, while the high clear is a defensive shot.


Clear (Boating)

Free of restrictions. Clear air is wind not affected by other boats or obstructions. When one boat is clear ahead (clear astern) of another, they are not overlapped.

Clear (Climatology)

Air Mode - a highly sensitive operational mode of a WSR-88D radar in which the antenna scans slowly, obtaining only 5 elevation slices in 10 minutes. This slow scan speed allows the radar to sense echoes from "clear-air" (i.e., no precipitation). These echoes can be from dirt, insects, smoke, and changes in the air density.

Clear (Field Hockey)

To move the ball away from the goal after an attack by the other team has been stopped.


Clear (Finance)

To settle a trade is settled out by the seller delivering securities and the buyer delivering funds in the proper form. A trade that does not clear is said to fail. Comparison of the details of a transaction between broker/dealers prior to settlement; final exchange of securities for cash on delivery.

To pass, poke, or deflect the puck away from one's own goal cage, or out of the defensive zone. As a noun, the act of clearing.

A market is said to clear if supply is equal to demand. Market clearing can be brought about by adjustment of the price (or the exchange rate, in the case of the exchange market), or by some form of government (or central bank) intervention in or regulation of the market.
