The process of presenting cheques to the drawer's bank for payment. For example, if a friend writes you a cheque, you pay it into your account. Your bank then sends it to your friend's bank, which decides if it will honour it. It should do if your friend has enough money in the account. If the cheque is returned unpaid, you will be advised by post. The process takes several days, which is why payments into your account may take a while to show up on statements.

Is the process of financial guarantee between clearing members. This activity intends to eliminate the risk of contractual or transactional default.
For example, two clients execute a trade through two different clearing member firms. The clients are solvent but at the end of the day one of the clearing members is not. This transaction through a clearinghouse would preserve the integrity of the trade.

Clearing has two meanings. In ice hockey you clear the puck out of your defensive zone by shooting it out of the zone - and not to a teammate. If you pass to to a team mate it is called a "clearing pass."
However in in-line hockey clearing is equivalent of ice hockeys icing. If the puck is passed by a defensive player over the center line and the goal line without being touched by a player the referee stops play and brings it back into the defensive zone for a face-off.
