Coding (Accounting)

in accountingis the assignation of the proper account code to invoices.


Coding (Data Management)

Entering the answer to survey questions into a computer in abbreviated form. For example, M for male, F for female. Coding in qualitative research uses the same principle, on a larger scale.


Coding (Direct Marketing)

Identifying marks used on response coupons to identify the mailing list, version of mailing, or other differentiation within the mailing.


Coding (Electronic Cinematography)

Representing an information signal as a series of numbers, usually in binary form.


Coding (Health Care)

A mechanism for identifying and defining physicians' and hospitals' services. Coding provides universal definition and recognition of diagnoses, procedures and level of care. Coders usually work in medical records departments and coding is a function of billing. Medicare fraud investigators look closely at the medical record documentation which supports codes and looks for consistency. Lack of consistency of documentation can earmark a record as "upcoded" which is considered fraud.


Coding (Marketing)

The process of translating responses to questions into numerical form for data processing.


Coding (Non-Profit Accountability)

Translate a given set of data or items into descriptive or analytic categories to be used for data labeling and retrieval. See also:Data Types


Coding (Qualitative Research Terms)

Labelling a piece of text or a statement, to make sense of it by summarizing it. Depending on the research question, one piece of text can be coded in various different ways. See also coding for surveys, which uses the same principle on a smaller scale.


Coding (Teacher Evaluation)

The process of transforming data, evidence, information, judgments, notes, and responses to numeric and/or alphabetic codes. See Code.
