Column (Architecture)

A slender, upright structure, usually a supporting member in a building. Freestanding or self-supporting structural element carrying forces mainly in compression; either stone, steel, or brick, or more recently, concrete.


Column (Computing and Social Science)

In a data file, a single vertical column each being one byte in length. Fixed format data files are traditionally described as being arranged in lines and columns. In a fixed format file, column locations describe the locations of variables.


Column (Construction)

A vertical structural compression member which supports loads.


Column (Furniture)

A supporting pillar; especially: one consisting of a usually round shaft, a capital (if Greek or Roman) or an ornamented bracket (if Oriental), and a base.


Column (Interior Design)

Round or square slender pillars, which are often used as structural supports, but can also be purely decorative


Column (Landscape)

A cylindrical, upright structural support in architecture, consisting of a base, shaft, and capital; an engaged column is one half-embedded in the wall behind it.


Column (Newspaper Design)

A vertical stack of text; also called a leg.


Column (Speleological)

A speleothem joining floor to ceiling, formed when a stalactite and stalagmite grow and join, or when either grow to meet bedrock.

Column (Technology)

1. A series of items arranged vertically within some type of framework--for example, a continuous series of cells running from top to bottom in a spreadsheet, a set of lines of specified width on a printed page, a vertical line of pixels on a video screen, or a set of values aligned vertically in a table or matrix. Compare row. 2. In a relational database management system, the name for an attribute. The collection of column values that form the description of a particular entity is called a tuple or row. A column is equivalent to a field in a record in a nonrelational file system. See also entity, field (definition 1), row, table (definition 2).


Column (Tradeshow, Exhibitor)

A pillar in an exposition facility which supports the roof or other overhead structures. Usually shown on a floor plan as a solid square.


Column (Tudor, Architecture)

A vertical weight-carrying architectural member, cuircular in cross section and consisting of a base (sometimes omitted) a shaft, and a capital.
