A generic term for a video game system.

Console (Automotive)

This may refer to the unit found between the front driver and passenger seat that contains the automatic transmission shifter, cupholders and a storage compartment. But it can also refer to the section of the instrument panel that includes the controls for the sound system and climate-control system, particularly if the panel flows down the center of the vehicle and includes the automatic-transmission shifter.


Console (Bell)

the case or framework which holds a keyboard; it may also contain a pedal keyboard or pedalboard by which the heaviest bells can be played with the feet as well as
(or instead of) the hands. A pedalboard is always present for traditional carillons, sometimes for chimes, and never for non-traditional carillons.

Console (Boating)

A structure in a powerboat, supporting the steering wheel, instruments, and engine controls. A center console is in the middle of the cockpit. A split console is divided by a passageway.

The part of a computer system used by the operator for communication
with the computer system.

Console (Computer Virus)


1. A program interface for the management of software or networks. 2. In a mainframe or UNIX environment, a terminal consisting of a monitor and keyboard.


Console (Entertainment Industry)

The audio board or control panel that allows the engineer to direct the audio signal to the recorders, and to combine the various audio components into the final mix.


Console (Furniture)

Term originally applied to a bracket that supported cornices or shelves and later used to describe tables that were affixed to a wall and supported with legs only at the front. Today it describes all types of tables used along a wall.


Console (Gaming)

The universal term used to describe a home video game system (i.e., NES, Genesis, etc.). You'll see this word used on the internet more than anywhere else.

Console (Interior Design)

Carved decorative bracket for supporting a shelf, bust or cornice


Console (Linux, Red Hat)

Screen or station at which an administrator operates a computer system. Also called a terminal, shell prompt.


Console (Networking)

This is a device (usually a computer) that you use to manage a networking device via a serial port (RS232) connection.


Console (Technology)

A control unit, such as a terminal, through which a user communicates with a computer. In microcomputers, the console is the cabinet that houses the main components and controls of the system, sometimes including the screen, the keyboard, or both. With the MS-DOS operating system, the console is the primary input (keyboard) and primary output (screen) device, as evidenced by the device name CON. See also CON, system console.
