Data Mining

For Data Mining we have terms and definitions in 7 topics. The topics are Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics, Business Intelligence, Computer Technology, Data Management, Supply Chain and Technology.

Data Mining (Artificial Intelligence)

The non-trivial process of uncovering interesting and useful relationships and patterns in very large databases to guide better business and technical decisions. Data mining is becoming increasingly important due to the fact that all types of commercial and government institutions are now logging huge volumes of data and now require the means to optimize the use of these vast resources. The size of the databases to which data mining techniques are applied is what distinguishes them from more traditional statistical and machine learning approaches, which can be computationally costly. Data mining forms part of the overall process of 'Knowledge Discovery in Databases.' Data mining is preceded by the preliminary stages of preparing and cleaning up the data, and followed by the subsequent incorporation of other relevant knowledge, and the final interpretation. See all the data mining projects for examples of use of data mining techniques.

Data Mining (Bioinformatics)

The ability to query very large databases in order to satisfy a hypothesis ("top-down" data mining); or to interrogate a database in order to generate new hypotheses based on rigorous statistical correlations ("bottom-up" data mining).

Data Mining (Business Intelligence)

A technique using software tools geared for the user who typically does not know exactly what he's searching for, but is looking for particular patterns or trends. Data mining is the process of sifting through large amounts of data to produce data content relationships. It can predict future trends and behaviors, allowing businesses to make proactive, knowledge-driven decisions. This is also known as data surfing.

Data Mining (Computer Technology)

This is the act of analyzing a database, or data warehouse, and searching for new facts based on the data. For example a supermarket may mine their customer data, and find that 87% of people that buy tunafish in a can also buy orange juice at the same time. Typically, you mine data for meaningful relationships that you can exploit in business.

Data Mining (Data Management)

A set of computer-based techniques for extracting useful meanings from huge databases.

Data Mining (Supply Chain)

The process of studying data to search for previously unknown relationships. This knowledge is then applied to achieving specific business goals.

Data Mining (Technology)

The process of identifying commercially useful patterns or relationships in databases or other computer repositories through the use of advanced statistical tools.
