Degrees of freedom

For Degrees of freedom we have terms and definitions in 3 topics. The topics are Audio Technology, Statistics and Surgery.

Degrees Of Freedom (Audio Technology)

The number of independent variables that must be specified to determine the state of a system. For example, to specify the position of a molecule, the x, y, and z coordinates are required, so it has 3 degrees of freedom. A collection of N molecules has 3N degrees of freedom. However in some cases, such as a diatomic molecule, certain degrees of freedom are restricted, reducing the number. See the short discussion elsewhere

Degrees Of Freedom (Statistics)

An integer value measuring the extent to which an EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN imposes constraints upon the pattern of the mean values of data from various meaningful subsets of data. This value is frequently referred to in the organisation of tables of statistical distributions used in undertaking SIGNIFICANCE TESTS. For simple one-way classifications the value of DEGREES OF FREEDOM is defined as one less than the number of subsets.

Degrees Of Freedom (Surgery)

The number of axes of movement (degrees of freedom), their arrangement and their sequence of operation permits movement of the robot to any point within its envelope. Robots have three arm movements (up-down, in-out, side-to-side). In addition, they can have as many as three wrist movements on the end of the robot's arm, similar to a human wrist: yaw (side to side, left and right), pitch (up and down), and roll or rotational (circular rotation/twisting).
