The indigestible parts - mostly cell walls - of plant foods. Unprocessed food contains fiber, processed foods do not. Insoluble fiber has the ability to absorb water which keeps your stools soft and easy to pass, so you have regular bowel movements. Soluble fiber dissolves in water to form a soft gel which helps lower your blood cholesterol, removes wastes and toxins from your body, and help you control your blood sugar if you have diabetes. They help eliminate bile acids and cholesterol from the body.

Plant parts that are not broken down in the digestive tract, dietary fiber helps move food more rapidly through the body, aid in bowel regularity and promote a healthy digestive tract. Sources of fiber include fruits, vegetables, grains, cereals, nuts, seeds and legumes (dried beans and peas). Certain dietary fiber may produce a modest lowering of blood cholesterol levels.

Consists of both soluble (dissolves in water) and insoluble (does not dissolve in water) fiber. Diets high in dietary fiber and low in fat may have a protective effect against many chronic illnesses, including heart disease and some cancers, and may reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol.
