Dimension

For Dimension we have terms and definitions in 5 topics. The topics are Business Intelligence, Fine Art, Ordination, Universe and Wood.

Dimension (Business Intelligence)

A dimension is a structural attribute of a cube that is a list of members, all of which are of a similar type in the user's perception of the data. For example, all months, quarters, years, etc., make up a time dimension; likewise all cities, regions, countries, etc., make up a geography dimension. A dimension acts as an index for identifying values within a multi-dimensional array. If one member of the dimension is selected, then the remaining dimensions in which a range of members (or all members) are selected defines a sub-cube. If all but two dimensions have a single member selected, the remaining two dimensions define a spreadsheet (or a "slice" or a "page"). If all dimensions have a single member selected, then a single cell is defined. Dimensions offer a very concise, intuitive way of organizing and selecting data for retrieval, exploration and analysis.

Dimension (Fine Art)

Amount of space an object takes up in one direction.

Dimension (Ordination)

This is a difficult term to define precisely in a comprehensible way. However, it is possible to grasp at a more intuitive level. It is the number of axes in a Cartesian coordinate system or the number of variables (unless some variables are linear combinations of other variables). Even though there are often a large number of dimensions, there are usually only a small number of important dimensions. A related concept to dimension is the rank of a matrix. The rank is "the number of dimensions of a space in which the data points lie" (Pielou 1984)

Dimension (Universe)

An independent axis or direction in space or spacetime. The familiar space around us has three dimensions (left-right, back-forth, up-down) and the familiar spacetime has four (the previous three axes plus the past-future axis). Superstring theory requires the universe to have additional spatial dimensions.
