Diode

For Diode we have terms and definitions in 9 topics. The topics are Automotive, Computer Technology, Explosives, Home Theater, Import Cars, Solar Energy, Technology, Transistors and Wind Energy.

Diode (Automotive)

Electronic device that allows current flow in only one direction.

Diode (Computer Technology)

This is an electronic device with two electrodes / terminals, one called the cathode (-), and the other the anode(+). The diode will conduct current in only one direction, and only when the cathode has been connected to the minus. Diodes are often used as a rectifier to convert AC power to DC, but they have many uses.

Diode (Explosives)

A two-terminal device having a low Resistance to electric current in one direction and a high resistance in the reverse direction. Diodes are thus useful as Rectifiers, converting alternating current ( AC) into direct current ( DC). Although Electron-tube diodes were once common, almost all diodes today are Semiconductor devices. In general, current flowing through a diode is not proportional to the voltage between its terminals. When the voltage applied in the reverse direction exceeds a certain value, a semiconductor diode breaks down and conducts heavily in the direction of normally high resistance. This effect can be exploited to regulate voltage. Some diodes are sensitive to light ( Photovoltaic Cell). A light-emitting diode (LED) produces light as current passes through it; some LEDs can act as lasers. A thermistor is a special semiconductor diode whose conductivity increases with the diode temperature.

Diode (Home Theater)

An electronic device that permits electrical current to flow in only one direction. The white stripe marks the cathode, or negative ( - ) terminal on the diode.

Diode (Import Cars)

An electrical one-way check valve made by joining P-material to N-material at a junction

Diode (Solar Energy)

An electronic device that allows current to flow in one direction only. See blocking diode and bypass diode.

Diode (Technology)

A device that passes current in only one direction. A diode is usually a semiconductor. See also semiconductor.

Diode (Transistors)

Rectifier. An electronic device with two wires or terminals. A rectifier allows electrical current to flow through in only one direction and is used for converting alternating current into direct current. Rectifiers were important for use in radios, which required direct current to power the amplifiers driving speakers or headphones.

Diode (Wind Energy)

A solid-state device that allows electricity to flow in only one direction.
